31 Jan Whitley pupils become ‘Dementia Friends’
On 30th January, a group of 38 pupils and Miss Hilditch took part in a session after school to learn about dementia and became ‘Dementia Friends’. The Dementia Friends initiative is a social action project from the Alzheimer’s Society to help increase awareness about dementia and how we can support those living with dementia.
The session, led by former Whitley Academy teacher and now Alzheimer’s Society volunteer Miss Webb, included a game of bingo in which students learned about myths and facts about dementia and lots of great discussion. At the end of the session, students thought of a small action they could take to make life a little easier for someone with dementia and received their Dementia Friends badge.
Students ranging from Year 7 to Post 16 worked together and showed real maturity in discussing the topic. Thanks to Miss Hilditch and Mr Edwards for putting this session on for school council members, student leaders and Health and Social Care students who have now become Dementia Friends.
