29 Jan Whitley Academy history found in Kettering barn
Back in 1984, an all white, two-seater car called “Abbey Cat”, was built at the then “Whitley Abbey Comprehensive School” of Coventry, by 16 year-old pupils Peter Walker, David Wyer, David Black, and 17 year-old Stephen Campbell. After completion, it was entered into the 1984 ‘BP buildacar’ competition, and eventually won, gaining a £1000 prize for the school, and helping its four pupil builders to get jobs in the motor industry. “Abbey Cat” had a glass-fibre body and was powered by a 20-year-old NSU Prinz air-cooled engine.
Last week pictures of “Abbey Cat” were shared with Whitley Academy by Coventry Live, after it had been found following the demolition of an old Kettering farm. We are delighted to know that a part of the school’s history is alive and well!
