Lawrence Whittle shows off the Whitley Academy Kit
Recently Lawrence Whittle won the chance to go to Twickenham to watch the England V’s Wales match in the 6 nations and also show off the new Whitley Academy kit that the students designed. Lawrence had to wear the kit and was on the pitch during the National Anthems. He was nearly in touching distance of the players! This was a fantastic day for Lawrence who said the atmosphere and noise was just amazing. Also it was a great match to watch with England comfortably beating Wales that day. This was a fantastic experience for a student to have and we are pleased the Lawrence enjoyed the day.
Primary School Athletics Festival
26 Year 10 Sports Leaders assisted Mr Openshaw in leading a primary school athletics festival on Friday 28th February 2014. The students were a credit to Whitley Academy, from their professional attire to their ‘outstanding ‘ leadership skills. 5 students took account for the scoring of the festival which included over 300 primary school children and the other 21 students set-up and ran athletics events. The events included: standing long jump; speed bounce; indoor javelin and many more.
Students exhibited some fantastic leadership values, that kept the children engaged and excited through-out. Miss Brown received lots of positive comments from the teachers that accompanied the students from the ten schools! Considering it was the Sports Leaders first big event, they demonstrated brilliant confidence and were able to give the primary schools a day to remember.
A massive well done from the PE team
All schools Rugby Programme
This year the school entered into a programme run by the RFU to try and improve the quality of rugby in school, and also increase the participation of students in rugby outside of school time. The school has been receiving some excellent coaching and played some matches and tournaments against local schools. Also as part of the programme, students were given the chance to design the schools kit, which is mad and given to us by Canterbury. The launch of the kit will happen this weekend during the England and Wales rugby match at Twickenham.
Lawrence Whittle in year 8, has won this opportunity and this weekend will travel to Twickenham to watch the match. Prior to the game Lawrence will wear the kit and parade this on the field of play along with all the other school involved. This will happen during the anthems. This is an excellent opportunity to listen to 80’000 people sing the anthems at a rugby match on the middle of the pitch, and we hope that Lawrence enjoys the occasion. We will put photos on the website of the kit after the event.
